Our Experience
We have a wealth of experience....
Since 1988 CPS Research has continually evolved systems for recruiting large numbers of patients and for collecting high-quality data from Primary care and community-based patients.
Psychiatry
Depression and Anxiety
This is a special area of interest for us and we have worked with all currently registered SSRIs, SNRIs and NARIs in the full spectrum of anxiety and depressive disorders. In 2003 we contributed more than a third of the patients to a pivotal study in depression which subsequently led to registration in both Europe and the
Insomnia
This is another area of great interest. We have recently completed the long term Phase 3 study for a new hypnotic in 925 patients. We also performed the key registration study for this compound leading to its approval by the EMEA in 2007. We were the only worldwide site for both these studies.
Dementia
Over the last 10 years we have undertaken trials in both Alzheimer's disease and Multi Infarct Dementia contributing to the registration of at least 2 compounds. We are currently undertaking the recruitment of 50 patients to a long-term treatment study with each patient receiving regular clinical assessments and MRI and SPECT scans.
Migraine
Several hundred patients with migraine have been tested with several of the tryptans, now on the market. We have also been involved with studies with simple analgesics, intranasal sprays, NSAIDs and COX 2 inhibitors.
Hypertension & Heart Failure
Diuretics, Beta-Blockers and Ace Inhibitors have all been investigated for these indications, often in co-operation with specialist cardiologists. A recent large end-point study for ‘at risk’ patients with ischaemic heart disease has been completed with a potassium channel facilitator.
Dyslipidaemia
As the area of the country with the highest incidence of ischaemic heart disease, we have been well positioned to recruit large numbers of patients to a variety of studies in this area.
Smoking Cessation
We have participated in long-term studies of patients with COPD who continued to smoke. The patients had regular pulmonary function tests and the study was designed to test whether or not the inevitable deterioration associated with continued smoking could be modified. We have also participated in a number of studies of interventions aimed at smoking cessation.
Anti-Bacterial
A wide variety of antibiotics have been tested on the spectrum of infections seen in general practice from ”Community Acquired Pneumonia” to simple soft tissue infections.
Anti-Viral Drugs
We have examined specific anti-viral medication such as Famcyclovir and Acyclovir and, in addition, have conducted a viral transmission study with an intranasal interferon.
Anti-Fungal
We have wide experience in managing, sampling and investigating topical anti-fungal problems.
Musculoskeletal
Osteoarthritis
We have conducted studies in the use of analgesics, NSAIDs, COX 2 inhibitors and physical pain relief devices. The numbers involved have ranged from 20 to 350 patients.
Gout
A number of studies have been conducted in acute gout, with a non-steroidal medication leading to registration for that indication.
Rheumatoid Arthritis
We have more limited experience in the conduct of Rheumatoid Arthritis studies. Longer-term studies, however, have examined the gastric tolerance of Cox II Inhibitors.
Osteoporosis
Three large studies have been conducted in Osteoporosis, involving a community survey using mobile scanners followed by several hundred patients being followed up for 3, 4 and 5 years. A small number are still being reviewed 10 years later.
Respiratory
Asthma
We have been involved in studies with wide spectrum of acute and prophylactic treatment for asthma both as tablets and inhalers.
COPD
The West of Scotland has a high incidence of COPD. This is an area of interest to CPS Research.
Pharyngitis
In 2009 we completed a 225-patient project in theindication of "sore throat". The study was completed in six weeks.
Gastro-intestinal
Duodenal Ulcer
Originally we were involved in this area prior to the registration of Cimetidine before undertaking a large relapse-prevention study published in the BMJ and subsequently being involved in a number of HP eradication studies.
Heartburn
The largest study in the world of the acute relief of heartburn comparing two OTC preparations has recently been undertaken.
Device Development
We have just completed an extensive assessment of a blood sugar monitoring device involving the assessment of patient behavior and its modification by the unique properties of the particular device. Previously we have assessed a number of devices for pain control.
Vaccine Development
Special patient groups such as the elderly have been recruited for a number of flu vaccine studies.
OTC
CPS was the first unit to appreciate the importance of correct testing of OTC and herbal medication together with nutraceuticals. It is important that appropriate subjects are enrolled for these studies and we have been involved with antacids, laxatives, analgesics, emollients, anti-pruritics and treatments for upper respiratory infections among others. Some of these studies have assisted registration; others have supported advertising campaigns.
